I missed March's First Friday but a couple days ago I was able to walk to some of the art galleries that were still showing work from then to write about. I was able to go see the 1708 gallery, the Quirk Gallery and the Visual Arts Studio Gallery.
The 1708 Gallery had a show called Rain or Shine that featured Kate Burt, Sarah Hollis, Ryan Mullingham and Stacy Searcy.
At first when I walked in I saw Kate Burts work and I thought why do they have a collection of several children's drawing. Then i walked up closer and realized it was all her journaling and sketching on copied pictures of the inside of a blank notebook. I could tell this artist had some OCD mannerisms. She was not a highly skilled artist or was a professional at what she did but it was interesting. I mean i would not display her stuff on my walls but it was cool to look at just as a one time thing. I had no clue until reading her artist statement that it was about consumerism or documenting her daily purchases. Her work surprised me every time i walked closer or found out more information about her stuff which is cool.
Now in the back I did not see which artist did what did not see any names put anywhere but what they had was very interesting. I think the funniest piece that compelled to me the most was a painting of this creature called Wookie McNugget Live looked kinda like a sasqwatch or big foot. (For some reason i keep seing pieces resembling big foot/sasqwatch and I always love it for some reason.) They had it displayed in a frame that looked similar to a circus tent it was very interesting.
The downfall of the show was the collection of small cloud paintings. I found it pretty boring and all I could think was why? I mean it is hard to paint clouds and the artist was good at it but I did not find it interesting at all.
Quirk was okay. I found these little ceramic/wire sculptures te most interesting. There was horses, cows, elephant and fish animals they made partly wire and ceramic. I like it alot because looking at the wire parts of it was like looking at skeleton of animal. It seemed like kind of a science art collection was very appealing.
What they had in the back was prety funny this artist Susan Whittier did pieces on paper glass and fabric. Most of the works were seeing legs and feet upside down was funny. One of her pieces were of the upside down legs cut out of paper and they casted a shadow onto the wall which i though was even more interesting.
I walked into the Visual Artist Studio and they had good variety of work there. Only a few artists took my interest though which were in the back room.
One artist there Peter Thasotom has a collection called Abstract in reality all were photos. Looking at most of them I did not really find the photos abstract at all. Half of them were pictures of old cars like Model T's he did not go up close to the grill or part of the tire so you could not tell what the picture was of. It was like just looking at it and thinking "oh its a car and how is this suppose to be abstract?"
The second artist that stood out to me was Doug Sutherland he had cut out paintings of a man and a woman to look like they were Jesus on the cross. The name of the work was Original Sin Man and Woman and it was oil on canvas. What I did not understand was how it was painted. It looked like it was printed form the computer and cut out. I could not see brush strokes or anything on the pieces. Getting away from that anyone that would see the artwork would probably stare at it for a long time. The man and the woman looked creepy they had arrows sticking out of them and cloth wrapped around there waist and that was it. All I could think was weird, creepy and cool.
